How Quick modifiers work
Quick modifiers let staff customize an item quickly while taking an order in person or over the phone. They are POS-only, not available on the customer-facing online ordering website. Staff make Quick modifications first, then press Next to complete required selections such as a meal's drink and side.
A quick modifier group is a reusable set of keyword instructions attached to menu items. A keyword is not a sellable item or a variation. Before + Extra + Ketchup produces “Extra Ketchup”; After + Hot sauce + On the side produces “Hot sauce on the side”; Individual “Medium rare” stands alone.
NC means No additional cost, not free underlying modifier. AC means Additional Cost with an explicit surcharge amount. ECOM means Eliminates cost of modifier, not removal of the item's base price. Labels such as No or Double do not themselves implement stock changes, multipliers or charge elimination. No defaults to NC, not ECOM.
When to use
| Feature | When to use it | Example |
|---|---|---|
| Before keyword | Staff need an instruction before an ingredient or option | “No” + “Pickles” or “Extra” + “Cheese” |
| After keyword | Staff need an instruction following an ingredient or option | “Hot sauce” + “On the side” |
| Individual keyword | A complete instruction should take one tap, without selecting an ingredient | Tap “Medium rare” to record doneness |
| Reusable ingredient collections | Staff need relevant options organized for fast customization | Proteins, Toppings, Buns and Dressings for a burger |
| No additional cost (NC) | The keyword should add no extra charge | “No” + “Pickles”; this does not make other selected modifiers free |
| Additional Cost (AC) | The instruction carries a configured surcharge | Charge the restaurant's agreed amount for an extra portion |
| Eliminates cost of modifier (ECOM) | The instruction should remove the modifier's charge | Use only when that pricing behavior is intended; “No” does not imply ECOM |
| Include modifier keywords in prep | Keywords help explain the kitchen instruction; leave off when modifier names alone are clear | A kebab ticket can show “Tomato, white sauce, red sauce” without repeating “Add” |
Use regular modifier groups for required selections such as a drink or side, and mainly for online upselling through optional extras. Quick modifiers provide the fast staff-assisted customization alongside those choices. See Modifiers and variations.
Include modifier keywords in prep is off by default. Turning it off affects prep output, not keyword visibility in the online ordering store. This does not make Quick modifiers available online; it controls how modifications are worded for preparation. See the prep setting for details.
An ideal setup for Quick modifiers
An ideal setup for Quick modifiers uses modifier groups to describe what the options are, rather than instructing someone to make a selection. For example, name a group “Dressings” instead of “Select dressing.”
This keeps the group understandable wherever it appears, including online ordering, while Quick modifier keywords supply the action during POS ordering—such as “Extra,” “No” or “On the side.” The resulting kitchen instructions stay clear, without duplicated or conflicting wording.

There are 33 default presets. None uses ECOM by default. For an AC keyword, enter the additional charge you want to apply; selecting AC alone does not set an amount.
Relevance and relationships
Use only meaningful options for the inspected item's preparation and service. An empty selection is valid: sealed bottled water served without ice needs neither No ice nor Easy ice. Medium rare may fit steak with doneness choices, not every protein. Kids size does not create a new supported portion/price. Underneath and To share are not universally relevant. Group compatible keywords/modifiers so possible combinations make sense.
Keywords, available modifiers, available modifier groups and item assignments are separate relationships. Creating a group does not attach it to an item. A group may be shared by several items and locations, so edits can affect more than the item currently being viewed. Items and choices must belong to compatible catalogues; see Catalogue structure.
When editing a group, check its other keywords, choices, order and assigned items before saving. You can reuse a whole ingredient collection instead of adding its choices individually. Removing a group from one item leaves the reusable group available elsewhere.
Set relevant choices and charges
Each keyword has one surcharge amount. Different surcharges for each modifier within the same keyword are not supported.
Offer combinations that match what you actually serve. For example, No pickles can remove a burger ingredient, while Extra beef can carry a charge you set. A product name alone does not list its ingredients, so check the recipe and available options.
Keep the default No keyword if that is the wording your staff use. Renaming it changes the wording; it does not change the pricing mode.
Example: a burger meal
Create a required group with title “Select” and description “Drink”, and another with title “Select” and description “Sides”. Customers choose from each group. Regular fries can be included while chili cheese bites, onion rings or sweet potato fries carry an upgrade charge.
Use separate optional groups for extras such as an extra burger or dips. Required selection does not make every option free: check the prices and selection limits.
For staff-assisted orders, add relevant POS Quick modifiers such as No pickles, Well done or Cut in half. Collections named Proteins, Toppings, Buns and Dressings can keep available ingredients organized without making each collection a required online selection.
Quick modifiers are available on POS only. Staff make these changes before pressing Next for the meal's required selections. Regular modifier groups can be used online and on POS.
